America's 100 metres world champion Tyson Gay has pulled out of Friday's head-to-head with former world record holder Asafa Powell in London.
The 25-year-old is still concerned by the left hamstring he injured at the US Olympic trials while attempting to qualify for the 200 metres.
Gay - who fell 12 steps into a quarter-final heat - said he had not wanted to disappoint English athletics fans, but his prime objective was to be fit for the Olympics next month in Beijing.
"I don't want to risk doing anything to set things back," Gay said. "I apologise to the London fans."
Gay has moved to Germany to undergo treatment. Although he is not ready for a return to action on Friday, it is reported that the injury is healing well.
The present 100 metres world record-holder Usain Bolt, like Powell a Jamaican, will compete in London; however he will only appear in his preferred event, the 200 metres.

It's a psych job! He doesn't want Asafa to beat him and have that advantage over him goin to the Olympics.... He got scared cause Asafa beat his 'New Kryptonite', Bolt... lol... but anyway u slice it, they will have to meet soon
how old are you, like four or something?
tyson is gay no no i meant tyson GAY is scared as usual
what a homo
Did I say the Olympics are held once per year? I hope that's the only thing I get wrong in the Olympics. I am sure you know I meant once every 4 years.
I am sorry that Gay will not be running but I agree that it is important that he recovers for the Olympics. This only comes up once per year and that is where I want Asafa to exact his revenge. Asafa was always able to beat him in one-off races but it was the rounds that created the problems. I want both to be fit as Asafa will feel better beating a fully fit Tyson Gay.
Well Tyson Gay, if you don't wanna meet Asafa this week, well Homie, get fit coz you gonna meet him ASAFA and BOLT at the Olympics ! For the sake of the athletics fomula 1 (100M), don't pull any hamstring ! REVENGE IS THE KEY !
Good luck to ya all !
