Beijing 2008 - History: Modern Pentathlon

Modern Pentathlon was introduced in the Stockholm Olympics of 1912 and has been contested at every Games since.

Eight of the first nine golds went to Swedish athletes. A team event, added in 1952, was last contested in 1992, but a tournament for women was added in 2000.

The event has faced calls for its removal from the games, but will remain as part of the programme until at least 2012. Europeans have dominated the modern pentathlon since its inception.

Congratulations to Heather Fell for getting Pentathlon Silver Medal in 2008 Olympics. Most thrilling to watch and following in great Olympic Medal footsteps of Dr Steph Cook, Kate Allenby and Georgina Haland. Think they should bring back the Team Modern Pentathlon as well for both the men and ladies.

Competitors earn points for their performances in each of the five disciplines: pistol shooting, epee fencing, swimming, riding (equestrian show jumping) and cross-country running.
