With Steve McClaren having been named new coach of Dutch side FC Twente, we look back at the former England manager's career.
Born on May 3 1961 in York, England.
A midfielder, he started with Hull City, joining Derby County in 1985. Reached a playing career high in 1987 by helping Derby win promotion to the old first division (now Premier League).
1992 - A back injury ended McClaren's playing career after stints with Lincoln City, Bristol City and Oxford. He began his coaching career with Oxford United.
1995 - Becomes assistant manager at Derby under Jim Smith.
1998 - After impressing at Derby, McClaren joins Alex Ferguson at Manchester United as first team coach, helping United win treble of European Cup, Premier League and FA Cup.
2000 - Joins England national team coaching setup.
2001 - Becomes Middlesbrough manager and in 2004 steered the club to its first major trophy with victory in the League Cup, earning the club a UEFA Cup place.
2006 - Boro reached the UEFA Cup final, losing to Sevilla.
May 2006 - Named England coach after Swede Sven-Goran Eriksson steps down.
October 2007 - England beaten 2-1 by Russia in a Euro 2008 qualifier but still only need a draw in their final match to qualify for the finals.
A 3-2 defeat against Croatia at Wembley knocks England out and McClaren is sacked the following day.
June 2008 - McClaren is linked to various club jobs in England but accepts a two-year contract to coach Dutch club FC Twente.
