Hull boss Phil Brown has bid for Wigan striker Marlon King and Bolton defender Abdoulaye Meite - and Wolves' Seyi Olofinjana could be next.Brown has already brought in six players to bolster his squad for the club's first season in the Premier League.
More signings are in the pipeline and, with a striker one of the top priorities, Brown has confirmed an offer has been made for King.
"We have spoken at length with Steve Bruce about Marlon King and we have tabled a bid," said Brown.
"In the front line we have only really got Dean Windass, Caleb Folan, Geovanni and Nicky Barmby - and the latter two only allow us to play 4-4-1-1, or with a man behind the front man.
"We're a bit thin on the ground with regards to the front line. We are in the transfer market for a striker or two."
King, who has also been linked with Championship side Derby, only joined Wigan in a £5million move from Watford in January.
Another fee in that region would smash the Hull record of £2million, set earlier this week with the signing of Peter Halmosi from Plymouth.
Brown also remains interested in bringing back Fraizer Campbell, the star of last season's promotion campaign, back to the KC Stadium.
Campbell scored 15 goals during his season-long loan from Manchester United and Brown hopes to open negotiations over a new deal - permanent or temporary - after the champions return from their South Africa tour.
Brown would also like to bring in Ivory Coast defender Meite from Bolton and Wolves' Nigerian midfielder Olofinjana.
"We flew by the seat of our pants last year with only two centre-halves really," said Brown. "We are in the hunt for another centre-half, if not two.
"For Meite there is a bid on the table. We have done our business really, that is as much as we can do.
"Olofinjana - having brought in George Boateng, we are quite strong in midfield but there might be activity going the other way to allow another space for Olofinjana.
"We have made an official approach to Wolves, although we haven't followed that up with a bid yet."
Brown, who has been linked with numerous players this summer, has dismissed rumours of a move for Portsmouth's Noe Pamarot as speculation.
Hull open their campaign at home to Fulham on August 16 and Brown would like to have most of his transfer activity concluded by then.
He added: "For me you have to try to get your intake in, to blend them together, to train together, to get used to the way we play and the formation and system, and the way we do everyday life in Hull, before the 16th.
"That's going to be my priority. If we get one or two before then, and the emphasis is on bringing stronger and better players in to help the current squad, then I will be happy."
