Gers Hand Initiative To Celts

Sat 17 May, 05:09 PM

Celtic are favourites to win the Clydesdale Bank Scottish Premier League after Rangers' 1-1 draw at Motherwell.

Christian Dailly was the unexpected scorer of the Gers' goal but Chris Porter snatched a point for Motherwell with a second-half equaliser from close range.

Rangers still have games to come against St Mirren and Aberdeen but Celtic's superior goal difference tilts the championship race in their favour ahead of their final game against Dundee United. Rangers, three points behind, now have just one game in hand.

The Gers had gone into the week hoping to win four trophies, three to add to the CIS Cup win earlier in the season, but following the UEFA Cup final loss to Zenit St Petersburg and this draw, only the Scottish Cup is now in their own hands.

Elsewhere, an 81st-minute goal by Kilmarnock substitute Paul Di Giacomo deservedly gave Jim Jefferies' side all three points as they beat Falkirk 2-1 at Rugby Park.

In the 10th minute, seconds after Paul Dalglish had missed the first of three great chances for the Ayrshire side by shooting over from 12 yards out, Pedro Moutinho's drilled shot from 25 yards put the visitors ahead.

Killie's Moroccan midfielder Mehdi Taouil levelled in the 24th minute with a deflected shot from the edge of the box.

And with nine minutes remaining Di Giacomo, on earlier for Dalglish, popped up to head Garry Hay's cross past Bairns goalkeeper Robert Olejnik.

Inverness withstood the dismissal of David Proctor to earn the point which makes them favourites to clinch ninth place as they drew 0-0 with St Mirren.

Saints would have taken ninth with victory at the Caledonian Stadium. They have another chance but must beat Rangers on Monday to jump above Caley Thistle, and earn an extra £70,000 in prize-money.

Proctor saw red for a professional foul on former Inverness striker Craig Dargo early in the second half but St Mirren failed to make their man advantage count despite peppering Michael Fraser's goal with a flurry of late shots.
