Recently-crowned Tour of Italy champion Alberto Contador said that he could be considered one of the greats of the sport.
The 25-year-old Spaniard added the Giro to his 2007 Tour de France title and is looking to win the Tour of Spain in September, though, he will not be able to defend his Tour de France championship because his Astana team were not invited by the race organisers after a series of high profile drugs scandals - none involving Contador.
"With the Giro and the Tour de France under my belt, I can justifiably consider myself one of the greats of cycling, even if there still remains a lot of work to be done to reach the level of the legends," said Contador.
Contador, though, has given up hope of being a late invitee to this year's Tour de France, even, though, world governing body the International Cycling Union objected to the organisers decision and offered to try and find a solution.
"I still think that it was a bad decision, without foundation, and which does not please me atall," said Contador.
"Astana will do its utmost to compete in the Tour this year."
Contador, though, while admitting his results can revive Spanish cycling, rejected flat out he could be compared to previous Spanish cycling legends such as Miguel Indurain or Pedro Delgado, both of whom also tasted glory in the Tour de France.

Attention Eurosport: Translation problem.
The word "grande" means a leading name, or a leading player. Oxford Spanish Dictionary, page 410
Contador said that having won the Giro and the Tour, he could be considered a leading name in cycling, but to be among the best he still has a lot of work to do.
As Manolo said in his response above.
contador isnt one of the best just yet but he is certaintly looking like he will be at 25 he has already won 2 grand tours and may make it 3 at the tour of spain. i think that he is the best around at the moment as for ricco he would be good if he didnt insult everyone, you need freinds in the peloton
Alberto, thanks for your work in Astana, you are making that Vino couldn't finish, because of Tour de France organizators. You and other members of Astana, again and again showed that Astana is a best team at that moment!
The article's headline is slightly misleading. In Spanish, Contador saying "I am among the greatest" can be said without a hint of uber-pride because he can mean "My accomplishments are among those of the greats" or "I'm proud of the company I'm with in having accomplished what I have"... Just clearing it up... It sounds like he's bragging when he might have been just stating he's proud...
Contador won and no one can change this. Well, maybe great is too much, but he definitely is a very good rider. Anyway, his comments are far better than Ricco's ones (finished 2nd, and blames everyone but himself). Ricco is the real Mr.Bigmouth here.
Contador"Im among the greatest",were they in the room aswell.jusonedrin
I think Contador still has some way to go before he can consider himself a great! The likes of Merx, Indurain, Armstrong, Delgardo and Coppi have achieved far more and given far more to the sport of cycling than he has, so a little bit of modesty wouldn't go a miss here Alberto and once you get rid of the drugs albatros (operation puerto) from around your neck you may well one day become a cycling great until then I'm afraid you're just a good team leader with GREAT POTENTIAL.
Dear all,Congratulations,Astana won the race, the first Asian and young team
keep this way Astana,regards
Contador you are great rider,I agree with you
it's a bit early for contador to proclaim himself as one of the greats of cycling. Ok he did win two major tour in two years but, in order o become a true great, he does ned to win way more. For what his tor win is concerned it doesn't make a difference whether he won the tour agains armstrong and basso r whether he won it agains mickey mouse. the tour is the tour and winning i is always a great achievement. the same can be said for the giro. I think cunego made the right decision to go to the tour. This might be the best chance he has to win it although he will have to put in great performaces ineachn mountan stage to overcome his trime trial deficit.
Errr I thought this years Giro had the best field for years. Pity Cunego opted for the Tour but don't blame him with the Tours easier route. Either riders are guilty (of sporting fraud) or not- How is a rider "at least as guilty as"?
Sadly it requires some effort to trust any endurance sportsmans efforts any more- Especially with so riders who have always come out of tests clean then being exposed as using drugs...So why didn't the tests work? Because the docs have better masking agents than ever- Especially for the richer teams/riders. Not sure of the solution but the present efforts are just self-serving eye candy. Sad.
Winning the Tour De France without Armstrong and Basso (Contador is at least as guilty as Basso) and a race where many favourites were kicked out of hardly makes you one of the greats. Plus this years Giro had very few big names, as it was even missing the best Italian rider.
